ABRAZO: This Year's Event

Abrazo 2007
August 10th, 2007

El Otro Lado

We live in a special place where rich cultures are blended together to form a fusion like no other place in the world. Many of us who live near the Southern California/ Baja border move regularly back and forth for our jobs, entertainment, shopping, education, health care and for family, exemplifying the interdependence of our two nations.

The other side, another country, just across the way. We chose this theme to celebrate this special relationship, the ways in which we need each other and the ways in which we benefit from each other. From this place of honoring and respect we are better able to expand the unique opportunities that this relationship provides.

Join us in the growing celebration!

History of Casa Familiar’s Annual Fundraiser

ABRAZO, which means embrace/hug in Spanish, is the title for our annual fundraising dinner held in August each year. It started as a “friend-raising” luncheon over ten years ago and as a way to say Thank You and publicly recognize our Latino community and the many individuals and businesses that had helped us reach and maintain so many successful program options. We realized that relying on sole source funding or the government to cover all of our costs and support the many programs we had initiated would not be possible without a diversified funding stream. This way the agency is free to pursue out the box approaches for age-old issues that can benefit from fresh and relevant improvements.

The guests at the ABRAZO Dinner are treated to a new theme each year and have enjoyed political heavy hitters as well as celebrity award winners and guests. Some of the luminaries have included Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante, Assembly Member Juan Vargas, Councilmember Ralph Inzunza, and County Supervisor Gregory Cox. Mayors of San Antonio and Laredo have also been included in our thank you to Latinos making a difference. Celebrities such as Cristina Saralegui, Tony Plana, Lupe Ontiveros, Edward James Olmos, and the cast of Resurrection Boulevard have all won ABRAZO Awards for their work, which highlights the Latino Community.

Our underwriters and supporters have helped to make the ABRAZO Dinner a very enjoyable event as well as a crucial fundraiser. We thank them for their past present and future involvement with us. UETA World Duty Free, Citibank, Small Business CDC, the Waitt Foundation, the Pine Foundation, Union Bank and many others listed on our acknowledgements page make up the building blocks of this annual event.
