Internship Position for Summer
Casa Familiar is looking for a summer intern for its community development department. The intern should be in a program that deals with development, such as: architecture, urban/city planning, economic development, or real estate. To qualify, interns must send their resumes in for review by May 26, 2006 and be continuing education students. Previous experience through volunteer work and working at non-profits would be helpful. Advocacy and community organizing work, strong bilingual skills as well as computer multi-media skills is also a plus.

Job Description
Casa Familiar believes in building community from the inside out, as such, constant community outreach and education is the preferred process the agency has adopted which includes community input through the project development process. The Citigroup Community Summer Intern would provide direct assistance to the agency’s community development department. The intern must possess strong communication skills be open to team oriented wok and also be fluent in the use of computers and graphic software. The intern will assist in organizing, analyzing and presenting solutions and assistance for project feasibility and development, and directly assist with the continuing development of Casa Familiar’s Economic Development Initiative. Finally, the intern will also create, organize and run a presentation at Casa Familiar’s “San Ysidro – Sin Limites/Unlimited” community development workshops.
Casa Familiar has embarked on a far-reaching neighborhood redevelopment project submitted (and adopted January 2004) to the City of San Diego as the “Mi Pueblo: Villages Create the City”, San Ysidro Pilot Village. This project is a comprehensive, multi-faceted mixed-use development project that looks to upgrade the older urban core of the community while providing housing. The intern would be involved in two particular projects within the San Ysidro Pilot Village. The first project would be to analyze the feasibility of developing small infill housing units through the “Affordable Housing Overlay Zone” Project. The second project would be to assist in the current development of a business growth and cultural arts center. The center will provide micro & small businesses with assessing their current status and needs for future growth, provide guidance and training, develop a retail-training program and will also include property development assistance.
Internship Period
The intern will be expected to work from June 1, 2006 through August 29, 2006. Work hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekends and major holidays excluded.
Internship Location
The intern will have a workstation at the Casa Familiar Community & Economic Development Department in it’s new home at the Business & Cultural Center. Andrea Skorepa, CEO and David Flores, Community Design & Development Officer will provide supervision.
Internship Benefits

At the end of the internship, it is expected that the intern should have been able to successfully project the work of the agency through a community presentation as well as integrated into the Casa Familiar website. The intern will also gain valuable experience in property development and management, operations and maintenance, and the value of integrating good design. This internship will also expand the communications skills of the intern in public speaking and presentation.
This Citibank Summer Internship will continue to advance the work of the agency in this large community redevelopment project which began with a 2003 Citibank Summer Intern. The agency will benefit in obtaining a skilled worker to ensure that as the agency expands its services to the main commercial corridor of the community it is well poised by ensuring it has a complete plan in place for dealing with redevelopment efforts, the creation of jobs and business growth assistance and advocacy.
The San Ysidro Community benefits in that it gains an ally in dealing with the obstacles of community economic development efforts. The community would begin to obtain valuable job training skills and the center would also make jobs available to community residents.
