Below is our listing of projects & programs that present our involvement in affordable housing, community and economic development.
Mientras Program (1994 - Present)Transitional Housing
This program provides shelter to homeless families for up to 90 days and is a partnership created with Park Haven Apartments. These two units are provided on an as available and needed basis.
Recreation Center 1 (1988 - Present)Facilities Management
This facility continues to provide not only community gathering space, but also recreational activities. We also use this for large community events like our Fronteras Festival in May, Dia De los Muertos & Thanksgiving in November, and the Christmas Toy Distribution!
Recreation Center 2 (1995 - Present)Facilities Management
This facility operates four computer tech centers, counseling offices as well as our fitness center!
Los Granados Senior Housing & Casa Familiar Office (1995 - Present)Acquisition and Rehab
Mixed-use development of senior shared housing and Casa Familiar offices.
Casitas de las Florecitas (1998 - 2005)Infill New Construction for Homeownership
Development of eight first time homeownership homes; completed construction in January. These units frame and support the use of a pedestrian corridor by incorporating the shared driveways into the landscape of the pedestrian alleys. Inspired by architects Luis Barragan and Ricardo Legorreta, the project adds much needed life to this San Ysidro neighborhood.
Mi Casa, Mi Pueblo & Sellsway Street Improvement Project - (1998/9)Neighborhood Clean-up & Improvement Capmaign
This project included a neighborhood cleanup campaign, Public Art installations, new fence, driveway and pathway construction & façade improvements.
Living Rooms at the Border (2001-Present)Acquisition and Rehab
This project is commonly known as the Church Project because it incorporates one of San Ysidro’s oldest and iconic structures – a 1927 church. This project has been locally and nationally recognized for the way it advances community design in terms of density and mixed uses. While existing zoning only allows for 5 units on this parcel, including the church, this project proposes 15-20 units of different sizes and configurations, community gardens that act as a passage, connecting alley to street, a small infrastructure to accommodate a Mercado, a community center in the refurbished church and offices for Casa Familiar.
Frederick P. Rose Architecture Fellowship (2001 - 2004)Urban Planning/Architecture/Design & Affordable Housing
The Rose Fellowship partners young architects/recent graduates of architecture programs with non-profit affordable housing developers and is administered through The Enterprise Foundation. David Flores was the Frederick P. Rose Architecture Fellow at Casa and the work through this fellowship lead to the development of policy, planning and architectural design strategies for future affordable housing development in San Ysidro.
San Ysidro Unlimited (2001-Present)Urban Planning/Architecture/Design & Affordable Housing
This program started in January of 2002, teaches an understanding of how residents can work to enhance and improve their neighborhoods. Other Program components include: leadership, process, community organizing, bilingual homebuyer education classes and a variety of workshops tailored to community residents.
“Abuelitos” Senior Gardens (2001-Present)Infill New Construction for Special Needs
This project proposes a horizontal density by interweaving public and private spaces, senior housing and a childcare center. All units are accessible from the alley and in turn open to an interior promenade where each senior can walk directly to the childcare court and building.
Mi Pueblo, San Ysidro Pilot Village (2002-Present)Urban Planning, Redevelopment, Community Organizing and Affordable Housing Development
This is the latest community redevelopment efforts that our agency has launched for the older section of San Ysidro. Together with other collaborators, Casa Familiar applied for and received the status of “Pilot Village” by the City of San Diego. The main goals of the work are to advance urban planning & development strategies and also introduce a new variety of housing with additional densities.
