La Semilla Groundbreaking Ceremony
On July 31 at 10AM, Casa Familiar gathered with the community to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for La Semilla Community Resiliency Center, an innovative, first-of-its-kind project dedicated to environmental justice at the border. This transformative project will turn a vacant 7,000-square-foot lot in the heart of the San Ysidro Historic Village into a versatile, multi-use center designed to support residents during climate and emergency events.
La Semilla is not just a response center; it is a hub of year-round programming and services aimed at empowering residents with the knowledge and tools to combat air pollution, extreme heat, drought, energy consumption, and other climate-related challenges.
The project is made possible through a state grant, part of the more than $93 million in funding approved this year by the California Strategic Growth Council for climate resiliency centers across the state. Casa Familiar, the driving force behind La Semilla, was awarded $8.4 million for this groundbreaking initiative.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors for their unwavering support of La Semilla. Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient community.
